Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton will soon be revving up his Mercedes Down Under in Melbourne, Australia, as Formula One races back into our lives.

But as much as we know all about Hamilton and his fellow drivers do we have such a great insight into the famous tracks they risk their lives on throughout the season?

Well, we do now thanks to the highly-respected, award-winning journalist Maurice Hamilton, the Radio 5 Live commentator, who has been covering Grand Prix racing since 1977.

Maurice’s latest book Grand Prix Circuits gives us a wonderful insight into the 71 circuits that have staged a Grand Prix-and he’s been to 57 of them either as a journalist or a fan visiting the ghost of circuit pasts.

This fascinating book covers all the little-known facts about the famous circuits we have come to love like Monaco, Monza, Spa Francorchamps and the old Nurburgring; detailing each one’s history and heritage supported by contemporaneous photography and detailed maps and atlases.

But we also get to discover some of the sport’s lesser-known venues such as the lethal four-cornered Avus track in Germany; the rectangular Ain-Diab circuit on the shores of Casablanca or Japan’s remote Tanaka International circuit.

Of course UK race lovers will have their special memories of Brands Hatch and Silverstone but what about the likes of Aintree where five F1 races were staged on the perimeter roads around the Grand National horse-racing course which heralded the first win for a British driver/car combination in 1957.

The first licensed road circuit in England was introduced in the grounds of a private estate at Castle Donington which hosted the 1937 and 1938 Grand Prixs and later the European Grand Prix in 1993.

Grand Prix Circuits features every track in chronicle order that has hosted a F1 contest from Monza to the latest circuit at Sochi highlighted by a bespoke digital map, an array of statistics covering laps record and names of corners and straights.

Triple world champion Sir Jackie Stewart, who writes the foreword, enthuses: “Every single circuit plays a vital part in motor racing history and I am delighted that Collins and Mauriuce Hamilton have gathered them together to produce such a memorable record.”
