If, like millions of football fans, you believe the Champions League to be the most misnamed, contrived competition in sporting history, or are increasingly annoyed at the way in which ‘big’ clubs undermine the FA Cup by fielding their reserves and treat the League Cup as a youth competition, you should read Lee Price’s excellent Turning My Back on the Premier League.

Price became so disillusioned with life as a fan of Manchester United (though he could be talking about half a dozen top-flight outfits) and the way in which the club, like so many others, had sold its soul, that he decided enough was enough. He switched allegiance to Dagenham & Redbridge of League Two in order to rekindle his love for the beautiful game, the sporting equivalent of a conversion on the road to Damascus.

Soaring ticket prices, sky-high wages, foreign players harbouring absolutely no affinity with supporters, the constant, over-hyped promotion of ‘the world’s most exciting league’ – a marketing phrase slapped on to the Premier League by someone who has never experienced a Bundesliga fixture – all drove Price to explore life with the Daggers.

Yet he doesn’t spend 250-odd pages poking fun at the Premier League because it’s clearly capable of doing this unassisted. Instead, Price shows himself as a genuinely passionate football supporter capable of dismissing the nonsense and hype surrounding our top light league and enjoying life as a spectator without it. He chose Dagenham & Redbridge, but it could have been just about any Football League club where the level of supporter expectation is more realistic and affinity between fans and players, as well as between supporters and club, is significantly stronger.

This is how football used to be before it decided to become a replica shirt-dominated business. Nor is it any less exciting than that played in the upper echelons by expatriate sportsmen earning seven-figure, tax-free salaries.

For supporters who have never ventured outside of a Premier League stadium, this is a compelling read. Once other fans have read it, they’re likely to re-affirm a love for ‘their’ club and bask in a warm, knowing glow, content in the knowledge that more people watch Football League matches ‘live’ than the Premier League. In a must-read account, Price confirms why.
