Published in paperback on 14th August, the latest Sky Sports Football Yearbook should, theoretically, be consigned to the dusty, inaccessible shelves of a museum, another victim of the internet’s galling omnipresence.

Type the words ‘football statistics’ into a Google search box and an astonishing 286 million references are made available inside 0.2 seconds. Here, you will find websites dedicated to domestic and foreign leagues, international matches, World Cups and even specific playing positions. Given the rise in statistically-based analysis by many football clubs, there are several hundred scholarly articles thrown in for good measure.

This enormous volume of data is the equivalent of anorak heaven, though one wonders whether there’s enough. A heavyweight Sunday newspaper recently suggested that the attention span of today’s teenager is less than 8 seconds.

Yet considering the constantly-changing nature of football stats, it’s a moot point to ask who could possibly find the time to lovingly pore over a collection of closely-typed football records, carefully laid out in a 1,056-page book, for goodness sake?

Well thankfully, millions still do because SSFY remains the football statistician’s Bible, the definitive word on everything relating to the game.

Yes, this information is available online, but there’s still a demand for it to be presented in book format, offering those of us who spend far too much time in front of a computer screen blessed relief from its constant, intrusive glare. What better way to absorb your footy stats (and they deserve to be absorbed and remembered) than reading about them in a book? It’s so old-fashioned, it’s probably trendy.

The SSFY, previously only ever referred to as ‘the Rothmans’, is now in its 44th year. Competition from internet websites might be as fierce as ever, but for the overwhelming majority of football fans aged over 35, there’s always a place for the game’s most trusted publication.
