For many poker players, this book really is the daddy of them all, a compelling, thought-provoking read from the "Mad Genius of Poker" himself, Mike Caro.

I saw Caro speak at Trinity College in Dublin a few years ago when the way he explained his psychological concepts and intricate ideas ensured he had his audience in the palm of his hand. Having heard him talk 'live' makes this book a much easier read (if you'll excuse the pun) as the focal point of his scientific concepts is the rather difficult notion of interpreting what an opponent is actually saying without him uttering a word. Even if science was not your thing at school, stick with this book because when Caro says he teaches us how to "use the science of tells - and win", he's not kidding.

Caro is essentially a theorist who has written about many of poker's most important concepts, which probably explains why he acts as a consultant to some of the world's leading poker players. His range of poker statistics are among some of the most widely quoted and he is most famous for his work on psychology and the philosophy of gambling.

In truth, Poker Tells is targeted at 'live' casino players as it focuses on body language, psychology, interpreting physical reactions and how to read your opponents, factors which you cannot take into account when playing online. But that's not to say online players should dismiss it, particularly when he outlines how a hand might unfold.

Caro doesn't hold back when it comes to self-promotion; he makes extensive use of his own MCU (Mike Caro University) poker charts to show how hands develop or to illustrate a point, but set the vanity aside and dig deep because it's worth getting past some of this guff for the text is littered with gems.

He explains how you should watch everything about your opponents, their manner, how they settle themselves and how they play each hand. But he's outstanding on other aspects too, suggesting ways in which you can learn from a player's appearances, his clothes and general demeanour. All cracking stuff and, when you try out Caro's teachings and theories on people you know, he is uncannily accurate.

In total, Caro offers 25 laws of tells and while that might sound like plenty to be getting on with, the way in which he categorises them suggests there's plenty more to be discovered by the curious poker player.
