As our short piece regarding poker's burgeoning popularity elsewhere in this week's SFTW indicates, a growing number of people clearly start playing the game every day. While it's encouraging to see a steady flow of poker-related books dealing with more advanced strategies and appealing to intermediate and experienced players, there is still plenty of scope for books such as this which are targeted at the novice.

Angel Largay is a cash game player who also teaches others how to win at no-limit Hold'em, although his book is firmly pitched at greenhorns. Basic skills, such as being able to read the board and recognise draws, are adequately covered here, although such content should not necessarily deter more advanced players from running the rule over some of those things they may have forgotten.

In fact, Largay's coverage of the game's maths is very good and although he starts with basics, his explanations are comprehensive enough to allow him to take his discussion much further than one might expect of what is an elementary textbook.

There are several topics, such as reading opponents which are, frankly, better covered in other books (see last week's review of Mike Caro's latest offering, for example) but the appeal of Largay's book is that he brings everything together under one roof. It's not the most taxing poker read, but newcomers looking for an easy introduction to the game could do worse than absorb its instructions before taking the plunge.
