This book's subtitle provides the clearest indication of where it is pitched (you might almost say it does exactly what it says on the front cover) because it is the ideal accompaniment to MTTs and is actually an excellent book for beginners.

Unlike other tomes which promise a seven-figure bank balance by the time you've reached the final page, Rodman and Nelson make it clear you will not be challenging the likes of Hellmuth or Ivey at the top table as you close their book.

Indeed, the authors maintain that their written efforts are designed to give enthusiastic amateurs a good shot at holding their own against players who are considerably better than them. In this instance, the better player is known as 'Phil', hence the book's title.

The authors are of the opinion that post-flop, poker becomes an incredibly complex game; accordingly, their strategy is to keep the said enthusiastic amateur out of post-flop situations where they're sure to be outplayed by Phil. They provide inexperienced MTT players with a list of playable pre-flop hands and assess their value on a cost-per-round basis. This is a good disciplined approach to any MTT.

Bear in mind that there's always someone who is a better poker player than you; the authors do and suggest instances where their KP strategy might be employed. Provided it isn't over-used, it's a tactic that should work well and makes this a book well worth reading.
