Every poker student has heard of Mike Caro, the self-styled professor of poker. He has become a one-man industry, publishing books on strategy and tells, as well as instructional videos and DVDs; there are many others who have tried to emulate Caro, but unlike most of the pretenders to his crown, he has the happy knack of making his content readable.
And so it is with his most recent title, Most Prof table Hold'em Advice-The Complete Missing Arsenal.
Like each of his previous dozen tomes, Caro's latest offering will find its way onto the bookcases of players at all levels, ostensibly because it resurrects strategies that might have been forgotten, misinterpreted or simply ignored. In many respects, it's akin to a revision course in poker with Caro adopting the role of benevolent, all-knowing teacher.
Caro's explanations are the best. They're simple and straight-forward, which means when he becomes more involved, such as when guiding readers through pre- and post-flop strategies, how they should bluff or establish an effective table image, he's already made the reader receptive by explaining earlier, easier concepts as comprehensively as possible.
Of course, he made his name by explaining the importance of tells and it would be unusual were he not to include a chapter on the subject. He does, this time with details of 'new' tells.
There is no doubt that this book explains what you should do in certain situations, but perhaps more importantly, Caro is at pains to stress why you should do it. Such attention to the game's underlying principles explains why the professor remains at the very top of the tree.
