When it comes to odds and probabilities, there are perhaps four different kinds of poker player. There are those who think probability is for wusses (aka 'donors'), then we have the majority - those who do believe in it, but just want to see the basic figures, so they can be memorised and put to use. Thirdly, we have those who would really like to see where that 11.15 per cent comes from, because it never seems to come out that way when they try to calculate it, and finally, we have those who can do even the most difficult calculations themselves, on the fly, which happens to be very few.

This book is aimed squarely at group three - the 'want to know, but would like to be shown by an expert' group - and those in group four who still possess sufficient humility to want to compare notes with another mathematician. It goes way, way beyond the usual 'what's the probability the river card will fill my flush?' type of questions to tackle long-shot odds, the probability of improving if you hang in for the turn card, and the chances your potential showdown opponent might have you beat.

Those with very modest numeracy skills will find this book incomprehensible, and tend to say that it 'requires a PhD to follow it', which isn't really true. But it's fair to say that, if you find the idea of reading Probability for Dummies daunting, you really shouldn't be going here.

Oh, one undocumented use for the book, which SFTW has learned from having it hanging around on the desk for the last three years or so, is that visitors catching sight of its cover tend to blurt out "Oh my God! Do you understand that stuff?" Which is not be a bad frame of mind to put them in just before your next home gameÖ
