It's not the most novel format in the world, but sometimes simple is beautiful and there can be no simpler idea than bringing together a dozen or so of the greatest players in a club's history and asking them to nominate and discuss in detail their favourite games.

The Match Of My Life series from Know the Score Books brings together a cracking read of behind-the-scenes stories and opinions that shed new light on some of the biggest games in the history of clubs such as Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield United, Sunderland and Wolves

Rather than review each one individually, it made more sense to combine them all under one banner, thus allowing fans to select their favourite.

The Liverpool edition, for example, features a plethora of legends from John Barnes and Jan Molby back through Tommy Smith to Lawrie Hughes, one of the few surviving members of the Liverpool side which won the first Football League title after the Second World War. "That era is a world away from the glitz and glamour of today," Hughes recalls. "It was our closeness and collective will to win that saw us through to victory."

Jamie Carragher relives the numbed dressing room scene during the incredible 2005 Champions League final with clarity and honesty. "The room was quiet. Nothing was being said. What could we say? We were getting slaughtered. We were 3-0 down in the biggest game of our lives," he says. Carragher still doesn't really know how Liverpool won that game.

The Leeds United version is also similarly packed with legendary figures, mostly from the Revie era, such as Peter Lorimer, Eddie Gray, Allan Clarke and Johnny Giles. Again the choice of some matches is obvious in such a trophy laden era, but others, such as David Wetherall's joy at scoring the winning goal against Manchester United in a regular league game in 1995, provide a telling insight into the rivalry which can still exist between top flight footballers, one which reflects the fans' trenchant views.

There's a heartfelt surprise in the Fulham edition, which sees legendary full-back Les Strong relive the greatest day out in the club's history - the 1975 FA Cup Final - from a unique perspective. Strong was injured in the final league match of the season and missed the showpiece event; "I was gutted," he recalls, "I felt very detached. I went out onto the pitch. The tunnel end was where all the Fulham fans were and as I emerged, they gave me the most amazing reception. I was feeling so down, but that was very touching." There are several such departures from the standard MOML theme throughout the series

This month sees the publication of a MOML Spurs and MOML Stoke. The line up for both books is impressive with the likes of Ossie Ardiles, Ricky Villa, Dave Mackay, Steve Perryman and Gary Mabbutt for Tottenham and Mark Stein, Mike Sheron, Mark Chamberlain, Denis Smith and Terry Conroy for Stoke.

Granted, each books' appeal may be limited to followers of the clubs featured, but the format allows the reader to relive memorable times, cup finals and league title-winning matches in the company of each club's greats. It's akin to sitting in the pub with some of them, which explains each individual title's appeal - hence they obviously make ideal gifts.
